Last evening (October 10), by an 8-1 vote, the Board of School Directors gave the green light to the District’s athletic facility project that will enhance the school's sports programs and benefit the entire community. The project is being funded in its entirety by reserves set aside by the school board for future renovation projects. No new borrowing is needed for the project.
The project, which has been the subject of extensive discussions and planning since October 2022 (project website), includes the installation of a state-of-the-art turf field, the replacement of the existing track, and the construction of a modern three-story field house. This endeavor marks a significant investment in the athletic infrastructure, aimed at providing students with top-notch facilities for training, competitions, physical education classes, and recreation.
The decision to proceed with this project was made after thorough deliberation and consideration of various factors, including the long-term benefits it will offer to students, athletes, and the broader community. The project represents a major step forward in our commitment to providing the best educational and extracurricular opportunities for our students. The new athletic facilities will not only enhance our sports programs but also create a vibrant hub for our community.
The key components of the project include:
- Turf Field: The installation of a high-quality turf field will provide a durable and versatile playing surface, ensuring that students and athletes have a safe, reliable space for various sports and activities throughout the year. All of the District’s field sports (football, soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey) would be able to use the field as will our marching band.
- Track Replacement: The aging track will be replaced with a modern track surface, designed to meet the latest safety and performance standards.
- Three-Story Field House: The three-story field house will be a centerpiece of the project, offering a range of amenities, including locker rooms, a student fitness center, public restrooms, meeting spaces, and equipment storage.
The project is expected to commence soon and be completed for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. Community members, alumni, and supporters of Elizabethtown Area School District athletics are encouraged to stay engaged with the project's progress.
