Health & Student Wellness

The National Association of School Nurses defines school nursing as the specialized practice of professional nursing that advances students' well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement.

To that end, the Health Services Division plays a crucial role in enhancing student well-being, with school nurses skillfully managing both acute and chronic health conditions while conducting screenings to uncover previously undiagnosed health issues. These proactive initiatives help ensure that students remain in school, receive timely care, and can fully engage in their education.

Beyond direct health services, our nurses actively collaborate with families to connect them with external medical resources and ensure compliance with state immunization, physical, and dental exam requirements, effectively reducing health-related barriers to education. By addressing these essential needs, we ensure that every student has equitable access to a free and appropriate public education, irrespective of their health circumstances.

Additionally, our school nurses partner with school counselors and committees, including the SAP and Safety Committees, to foster a nurturing environment that promotes both student well-being and academic achievement.

School nurses support our school learning environments by:

  • Facilitating positive student responses to normal development
  • Promoting health and safety
  • Intervening with actual and potential health problems
  • Providing case management services
  • Collaborating with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

If you wish to speak to a member of the health services department concerning your child, please contact the school nurse or healthroom nurse in your child's building.
