Started in 1998, the commemoration celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday and has become the nation's largest reading event.
Read Across America Day
Elementary schools across the District held special programs to promote reading To honor Dr. Seuss, many students and teachers dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters and read their favorite Dr. Seuss books in class.

Read Across America has become a national day of literacy and is designed to motivate students to read. It is held on March 2 each year, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. The District’s objective is to stimulate students' passion for reading by showing them how much joy and satisfaction reading can provide.
