Bear Creek School launches One School, One Book program
January 27, 2023- The Bear Creek School will celebrate literacy in February with the month-long reading initiative, One School, One Book. To kick off the program and excite the students about the challenge, a school-wide assembly was held on Friday, Jan. 27, to introduce this year's book, Save Me A Seat, by children's authors Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan.
At the assembly, fashioned more like a pep rally, art teacher Ayla West and librarian Erin Hibshman took part in the school's first-ever Bear Creek Bake Off. The Bake Off mirrored the book's plot, where two classmates from opposite sides of the world become friends and learn they have much in common.
One District, One Book is a national program where schools read a common text together as a community. The One School, One Book program creates a school-wide book club where everyone in the school community, from students and their families to teachers to principals, read the same book. Throughout the month, there will be fun school-wide activities and the awarding of prizes.
This program aims to promote family literacy in our community and, in doing so, instill in its students a positive attitude toward reading and life-long learning.
