Rheems Elementary celebrates fire prevention month
October 25, 2019- Rheems Elementary School celebrated Fire Prevention Month on Friday, Oct. 25 to stress the importance of being prepared in the event of an emergency. As part of the special program, representatives of the Rheems Fire Department held an assembly to share important safety tips.
Students learned how to call 911; the importance of smoke detectors; how to stop, drop, roll, and cover your face; and how to develop an escape plan. In addition, a member of the department dressed in his fire gear to help alleviate the students’ fears in case of an emergency.
Once the program was over inside, the students went out to the parking lot where a fire truck was on location. The students learned about all the different tools, devices, and hoses on the truck and what they are used for in fire fighting.
Representing the Rheems Fire Department were deputy chief Kevin Kretzing, assistant chief Ladd Robinson, engineer Mark Faust, and firefighter Justin Hoover.
As part of the program, Kretzing encouraged all Elizabethtown area families without fire detectors to stop by their local fire department for a free detector.
