Bear Creek School students host 'Mix It Up at Lunch Day'

October 23, 2019- Bear Creek School recently hosted a “Mix It Up Day” lunch to promote inclusion and connect students with a new classmate over lunch. Timed to coincide with the international campaign, the Bear Creek School joined thousands of schools across the globe on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in helping its students step outside their comfort zone and get to know a peer(s) they may have never met.

To make it easier for students to sit with someone new at lunch, school staff handed each student a playing card when they entered the cafeteria. Students with identical playing cards were matched based on a pre-arranged seating chart. In addition, school staff fostered a relaxed, fun environment with music, dance, and conversation starter questions.

Mix It Up Day is a simple call to action that challenged the students to take a risk and make a new friend in a safe, supportive environment. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice and bullying, as well as build a more inclusive and welcoming school community.
