Winter Weather Phone Messaging System

  • Communication is a priority for the Elizabethtown Area School District. For that reason, the District uses the School Messenger Emergency Notification Service to communicate information of critical importance in a timely manner with parents and guardians. Through the School Messenger system, school administrators can send a pre-recorded phone message, email, and/or an automated text message to our families. The District uses the School Messenger Emergency Notification System to communicate unplanned school delays and closings due to inclement weather.

    NON-WEATHER RELATED SCHOOL EMERGENCIES

    • On matters of critical importance (excluding school delays and closing due to inclement weather), an automated phone message, email, and/or text message will be sent to all parents and guardians using the contact information we have on file for each child as part of the student record.
    • There is NO need to register to receive a phone call/text for a school emergency that necessitates an unplanned school closing, delay, and/or early dismissal such as a utility failure, community issue, etc with the exception of unplanned school delays and closings due to inclement weather (see information on weather-related communication below).
    • Please ensure contact information is accurate including phone numbers, textable numbers, and email addresses. Contact information can be reviewed and updated through the District's Community Portal.
    • In order to receive a text message from the District, you need to send the one-time text message of “Yes” or “Y” to 67587 from your mobile device. This will opt you into the service to receive all future correspondences on this device.

    WEATHER-RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS PHONE CALLS

    • Parents and guardians MUST VOLUNTARILY REGISTER EACH YEAR for this service.
    • The phone number or numbers you voluntarily register for the Winter Weather Phone Messaging System will only be used when a decision is made to delay or cancel school due to inclement weather (does not need to be the same number(s) on file with the District through the Community Portal).
    • If you are interested in receiving an automated phone call in the early morning hours from the district when school is closed or delayed because of weather, complete the form below.
    • This “opt-in” system allows parents and guardians to voluntarily register a single phone number or numbers where a call(s) can be received if you wish to receive a winter weather school delay or closing phone call.
    • The form can be updated and resubmitted at any time if your contact information changes.
    • By registering, you are authorizing the District to add the phone number(s) you submitted to its Winter Weather Phone Notification database and you will receive a phone call when a School Messenger call is placed by the District for weather-related school closings and delays in the early morning hours.
    • If you are not interested in receiving an early morning, weather-related phone call from the District when school is closed or delayed, the District also posts school closing and delay information on its website, mobile app, and Facebook page, as well as local television and radio stations.

    WEATHER-RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS TEXT MESSAGES

    • Parents and guardians MUST VOLUNTARILY REGISTER EACH YEAR for this text messaging service.
    • Text messages are often sent between 5 and 5:30 a.m.
    • The number or numbers you register for the Winter Weather Text Messaging System will only be used to text registered families when a decision is made to delay or cancel school (does not need to be the same number(s) on file with the District).
    • Receiving an automated text message for WINTER WEATHER in the early morning hours (typically between 5 and 5:30 a.m. phone call) is VOLUNTARY.
    • If you are interested in receiving an automated text message in the early morning hours from the district when school is closed or delayed because of weather, complete the form below.
    • If you selected to receive the message via text, you need to send the one-time text message of “Yes” or “Y” to 67587 from your mobile device. This will opt you into the service to receive all future correspondences on this device.
    • Until you send the one-time text message, EASD texts will be blocked on your device and you will not receive text messages.
    • If you have more than one “textable” number on file with the school district and are unsure which device(s) needs registered, we encourage you to take the same action for both devices and text “Yes” or “Y” to 67587.
    • Families need to register EACH YEAR for this service.

WEATHER-RELATED OR OTHER UNPLANNED EARLY DISMISSALS

    • For unplanned early dismissals due to weather or building/community related issues, an automated phone message, email, and/or text message will be sent to all parents and guardians using the contact information we have on file for each child as part of the student record.
    • Please ensure contact information for parent/guardian is accurate including phone numbers, textable numbers, and email addresses. Contact information can be reviewed and updated through the District's Community Portal.
    • In order to receive a text message from the District, you need to send the one-time text message of “Yes” or “Y” to 67587 from your mobile device. This will opt you into the service to receive all future correspondences on this device.

While the School Messenger Emergency Notification System is used to place both the phone calls and text messages for unplanned school closings and delays due to inclement weather, you need to register seperatey for the method(s) of communication you wish to receive. For questions about the District's use of School Messenger or to have your name and/or number removed from the School Messenger list, please contact Troy Portser at ext. 10024 or troy_portser@etownschools.org.
