Fall Parent/Guardian Conference Scheduler is Now Open

Bear Creek Fall Parent/Guardian Conferences are scheduled for the afternoon and evening of Thursday December 9th and the morning and afternoon on Friday December 10th. We will be giving families the option for an In Person OR Virtual conference. First, parents/guardians should visit the district's Parent/Teacher Conference Website and then click to access the Canyon Creek Online Scheduler. Bear Creek families will need to use the Password bears to access the site. Once you sign up for a time, you will need to let your child's homeroom teacher know if you would prefer to make your conference virtual. The teacher will then share a Zoom link with you. If you do not set up a virtual conference with your child's homeroom teacher, it will be assumed that your conference will occur In Person at Bear Creek. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions!

Home Testing Option (Rapid Antigen Test)

The health services team would like to remind families that effective Monday, September 27, 2021, the District began accepting the results of an over-the-counter at-home test (Rapid Antigen Test) for asymptomatic close contacts only. Please note that the result of an over-the-counter at-home test is NOT acceptable for students who are symptomatic! To exercise this option, a photograph, which includes the student's name, date of the test, and the visual result, would need to be uploaded via email/text to the specific building nurse or the appropriate District designated Covid Point of Contact (POC). Please feel free to reach out directly to these individuals if you are interested in this option.

    Transportation Survey

To follow up the district message to families, please complete the 21-22 Transportation Opt Out survey by the end of October. Our goal is to identify students that EASD has assigned to a bus that do not intend to ride the bus. In doing so, we will be better positioned to reduce unnecessary stops and seat assignments. This information is critical as we try to work through this bus rider shortage. We recognize that situations may change, so if you "opt-out" of transportation at this time and later have a need for transportation, you simply need to contact transportation@etownschools.org and give us a few days to make sure a seat and stop are ready for your student(s). Please complete a separate survey for each student.

Bear Creek Fifth Grade Ag Day: Thursday 10/14 (Rain Date Friday 10/15)

Attention 5th Grade Families: The Elizabethtown Agricultural Department will be hosting the 17th Agricultural and Environmental Science Day at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds in the Show Ring and Livestock Pavilion on Thursday October 14, 2021 with the rain date of Friday, October 15, 2021. Although this program has always been presented to our fourth grade students, this is the perfect year to transition to fifth graders as these students missed this experience last school year. A unit on agriculture is an important part of the fifth grade curriculum, so this program will be a valuable experience educationally for our students. FFA student leaders will present each learning station. The concepts taught at the different learning stations include: Dairy Science; Poultry Science; Equine Science; Livestock Science; Agriculture Equipment Safety; Wildlife; Environmental Science; Aquatics Resources; Small Animals and Vet Science; and Plants, Seeds, and Soils.

Fifth grade students will attend a two hour session in either the morning or the afternoon. Students will walk with their groups from the Bear Creek School to the fairgrounds. Please be sure to dress students appropriately on Thursday 10/14 so they are prepared for the walk and the outdoor learning activities.

Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) with any questions you may have.

    School Attendance

Regular school attendance is critical to a quality education and is essential for successfully completing the educational objectives of the Elizabethtown Area School District. Unexcused absences disrupt the continuity of the instructional process. Below, we have provided our families with a brief overview of our attendance process.

Pennsylvania Compulsory School Attendance (PCSA) laws govern our school attendance policy. Brief highlights are as follows:

    • Excusable absences include: (1) legitimate illness; (2) medically/legally documented appointments; (3) quarantine; (4) death in the immediate family; (5) impassable roads; (6) exceptionally urgent reasons that affect the child as determined by the administration; and (7) Educational Trip experiences pre-approved by the administration.

    • PCSA laws classify a student as “truant” upon the accumulation of three illegal absences.

    • PCSA laws classify a student as “habitually truant” upon the accumulation of six illegal absences (at this time, a truancy meeting will be offered to the family to discuss the absences).

    • At ten illegal absences, a truancy citation can be filed with the local magisterial district judge (if you receive an attendance notification, kindly respond promptly).

    • EASD will send official notices to the parent(s)/guardian(s) upon accumulating three, six, and ten illegal/unexcused absences.

Be aware that illegal absences can result in the inability to make up missed assignments and academic decline. CLICK HERE for more information on school attendance.

Home Testing Option (Rapid Antigen Test)

Several constituents had reached out to District Administration regarding the high costs of Covid Tests at regional facilities for asymptomatic students who have been placed in quarantine as close contacts. The constituents requested that the District review the alternative option of "over the counter" take-home tests for students to be able to return to school in a more efficient /cost-effective manner. The health services team met with our school physician on the effectiveness of the Home Testing Option (Rapid Antigen Test) and how the District would verify results to enable students who are asymptomatic AND yield a negative test to return to school.  We are pleased to announce that effective Monday, September 27, 2021, the District will begin accepting the results of an over-the-counter at-home test (Rapid Antigen Test) for asymptomatic close contacts only. To exercise this option, a photograph, which includes the student's name, date of the test, and the visual result, would need to be uploaded via email/text to the specific building nurse or the appropriate District designated Covid Point of Contact (POC). Please feel free to reach out directly to these individuals if you are interested in this option.

Updates on Classroom and Cafeteria Seating at Bear Creek

Please know that we have been adjusting lunches over the past week in order to provide the safest experience for our students in the cafeteria. Today, we were able provide 6' of spacing between all student seats in the cafeteria. This will ensure that all Bear Creek students are able to eat safely in the cafeteria without a mask. All teachers were also to make adjustments in the classroom to ensure that all students are seated at 3' of spacing. We were able to do this without altering the Bear Creek instructional program. Please reach out to Dr. Frank or Mr. Kingsborough with any questions.

    Medication and First Aid Consent

In mid-August, we experienced technical difficulty with some Parent/Guardian submissions of our Medication and First Aid Consent Forms. As such, if you see the Medication and First Aid Consent Forms tabs reappear in your child’s Community Portal account, you must submit them again. These online documents provide critical direction for our health services department if our school nurses need to care for your child while they are in school. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your diligence in submitting these necessary forms.

    Livestreaming of Classrooms

Please know that livestreaming of classrooms will only occur for students who must quarantine from school. These students will have to be approved by the nurse, who will then communicate with the child's classroom teacher. The classroom teacher will then provide a Zoom link to the students on quarantine. As a reminder, car rider tags were sent home in the summer mailing. Please stop in the Bear Creek office if you need a car rider tag. Also, Bear Creek has a fabulous traffic guard who manages the traffic at Bear Creek during dismissal. Please check with her if you are confused on where to wait before entering the pick-up loop.

         * Car Rider Drop-Off and Pick-Up is NOT available at the fairgrounds during the first week of school (8/23-8/27). The walking trail is open for walkers only the first week of school. Car Rider Drop-Off and Pick-Up at the fairgrounds will resume on Monday 8/30.

EASD Families: In preparation for the Elizabethtown Fair coinciding with the start of the 2021/2022 school year, we would like to provide information how the district will be addressing fair-related absences. The 2021/2022 school year begins for all Elizabethtown Area School District students in grades 1-12, on August 23, 2021.  This week will consist of half-days, ending at 12:35pm for students in grades 1-5, and 11:23am for students in grades 6-12. If your student is actively participating in a fair-related event (ie showing and/or caring for animals) which will require an excusal from school, please complete an Individual Learning Experience form, to ensure that your student’s attendance adequately reflects the absence reason.  A link to this Form is included below. Please note that this is only for students actively participating in fair events, not for students who attend the fair for leisure during the day or evening hours. If you have questions, please reach out to the building principal of your child’s school, or contact Jennifer Fields/EASD Home & School Visitor, at jennifer_fields@etownschools.org.
