Parent Request - Bus Stop Changes

The Elizabethtown Area School District is committed to providing safe and efficient transportation for all eligible students. Bus stop locations are established using district routing procedures and safety guidelines that balance student safety, travel time, and operational efficiency.

Parents and guardians may request a change to their student's assigned bus stop. Before submitting a request, please review the information below to better understand how bus stops are established and how requests are evaluated. While every request is carefully considered, approval cannot be guaranteed.

How Bus Stops Are Determined

Bus routes are designed to travel on main roads through neighborhoods whenever possible, with students assigned to centralized bus stops that promote safety and efficient routing.

In general:

  • Bus stops are located at corners or intersections whenever possible.
  • Students are assigned to central pickup and drop-off locations serving multiple households.
  • Older students may be expected to walk farther than younger students.
  • Students living within the district's designated non-transportation zone are not eligible for transportation.

Why Bus Stops Are Located at Central Locations

Student Safety

Central bus stops help improve student safety by:

  • Encouraging students to cross streets at intersections.
  • Utilizing existing traffic controls such as stop signs and traffic signals.
  • Providing better visibility for bus drivers.
  • Allowing motorists additional warning when buses stop to load and unload students.

Transportation Efficiency

Centralized stops also help the district:

  • Reduce student ride times.
  • Minimize unnecessary stops.
  • Improve route consistency.
  • Better accommodate new students throughout the school year.
  • Reduce fuel consumption and vehicle wear.

Requests That May Not Result in a Bus Stop Change

The following circumstances generally do not qualify for a new or individual bus stop:

  • The bus passes a student's home.
  • The existing stop is not visible from the student's house.
  • Only one student uses the stop.
  • Sidewalks are not available.
  • Inclement weather.
  • Preference for a stop closer to home.

Each request is reviewed using established transportation and safety criteria.

Processing Requests

Please allow 5-10 business days for the Transportation Department to review your request.

Requests are evaluated individually and are not guaranteed approval.
