S E R V E S Program for Senior Citizens
Through the district’s S.E.R.V.E.S. program (Seniors Earning Rebates by Volunteering in Elizabethtown Schools), senior citizens can volunteer in various capacities to earn a discount on their taxes.
The goals of the S.E.R.V.E.S. program
To provide an opportunity for the reduction of the real estate tax burden on senior citizens, provide an opportunity to communicate life skills and experience to students of the School District, to help develop greater school and community interaction, and to provide service to the School District in areas of need.
Who qualifies to participate in the S.E.R.V.E.S. program
Any senior citizen age 60 years and over who is retired, is a property owner and occupant of that property, and pays the school tax for that property may participate

Payment of Tax Credits for Service
S.E.R.V.E.S. payments will be issued in Late August and will be provided directly to the volunteer via direct deposit or check.
Volunteers are responsible for applying the payment to their School District real estate tax bill. The School District will no longer apply credits directly to tax bills or issue tax credit vouchers.
S.E.R.V.E.S. payments are issued to the volunteer only and cannot be transferred to another individual or property.
Time Schedule
Volunteers may work up to the maximum hours established by the School District and earn a tax credit at the district-established rate, equal to minimum wage, not to exceed the maximum credit allowed by the District. The total credit for a household may not exceed the District’s established maximum, and in no event may the credit exceed the total annual School District property tax owed. Volunteers must report to their assigned work location and satisfactorily perform assigned duties. Failure to meet performance expectations may result in removal from the S.E.R.V.E.S. program. Hours worked beyond the maximum eligible limit will not result in additional credit.
Social Security Notice: Earnings associated with the tax credit may be reported to the Social Security Administration and could affect your tax status. Participants should consult a tax advisor regarding potential impacts.
