Integrated Pest Management Plan

The Elizabethtown Area School District uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to control insects, rodents, and weeds while reducing the need for pesticides whenever possible. Our goal is to protect students, staff, and visitors by maintaining clean, well-maintained buildings and grounds that are less likely to attract pests.

Through routine cleaning, maintenance, and monitoring, the District works to remove food, water, and shelter sources that pests need to survive. When a pest concern is reported, the District’s IPM Coordinator reviews the situation and determines the most appropriate response. Common strategies may include improved sanitation, changes to storage practices, sealing entry points, and physically removing pests when appropriate.

When pesticide use is necessary, the District uses products registered by the Environmental Protection Agency and selects the least toxic product proven effective. Pesticides are applied only when students, staff, and visitors do not have access to the treated area. Unless an emergency situation exists, notices are posted 72 hours in advance and remain posted for two days after application.

Families who wish to receive advance notice of pesticide applications may be placed on the District’s pesticide registry. To be added to the registry, please submit a written request to the IPM Coordinator including your name, address, phone number, child’s name and grade level, and email address if you would like electronic notifications.

In the event of an emergency pesticide application, parents and guardians listed on the registry will be contacted by telephone when required. Certain products and applications are exempt from advance notice requirements, including disinfectants, antimicrobial products, self-contained baits placed in inaccessible areas, gel-type baits placed in cracks or voids, and swimming pool maintenance chemicals.
