Elizabethtown Area High School to Honor 1974 State Field Hockey Team

Elizabethtown Area High School proudly announces a special ceremony to honor the 1974 State Field Hockey Team, marking the 50th anniversary of the school’s first-ever state championship. The event will occur on October 11 at 6:30 PM at White Family Dental Stadium, just before the Bears football team faces the Buckskins of Conestoga Valley.

In 1974, the Elizabethtown team claimed the school’s inaugural state title and made history by winning the first-ever Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state championship for field hockey. Prior to 1974, postseason play for field hockey concluded at the district level, making this achievement even more monumental.

On their way to the gold, the Bears dominated Lake-Lehman in the first round with a commanding 4-0 victory. They followed up with a close 1-0 win against Fox Chapel in the semifinals. In the championship game, they battled to a 0-0 tie against Emmaus, ultimately winning by way of penalty corners to secure the state title.

The entire Elizabethtown community is invited to come out and celebrate this distinguished group of athletes who paved the way for future sports programs at EAHS. Fans are encouraged to join the festivities and stay to cheer on the Bears as they take on the Buckskins.

Members of the 1974 state championship team are encouraged to attend and reconnect with former teammates. Those who plan to attend should contact Greg Wood at 717-940-8740 for additional information.

Let’s unite to honor Elizabethtown’s sports history and support our current athletes as they continue the legacy of excellence!
