The second grade team of teachers at East High Street Elementary School, with the help of parent volunteers, recently hosted an exciting grade-level celebration to mark the completion of the CKLA Knowledge Unit on fairytales and tall tales. The event, a “Colossal Flapjack Party” in honor of Paul Bunyan, encouraged students to dress as their favorite fairytale or tall tale character, making the occasion both educational and fun.
CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) is the District’s new English Language Arts curriculum at the elementary level. Designed to build students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, CKLA emphasizes knowledge-based learning. It combines structured phonics for decoding with content-rich units that expand students' understanding of key topics such as history, science, and classic literature.
The fairytale and tall tale unit allowed students to explore beloved, larger-than-life figures like Paul Bunyan. The celebration was a memorable way for students to bring these stories to life and solidify their understanding of the unit.
East High Street Elementary is proud to embrace CKLA’s hands-on and engaging approach, which continues to enhance students' literacy skills and foster a love for storytelling.
