Bear Creek Students Shine at Regional IU13 Invention Convention

Bear Creek students recently participated in the Regional IU13 Invention Convention, showcasing their creativity, critical thinking, innovation, teamwork, and communication skills.

The competition required participants to use the design process to develop unique inventions aimed at solving pressing issues. Each design highlighted the students’ ability to think outside the box and work collaboratively to bring their innovative ideas to life and model their problem-solving skills. Alongside competition judges, educators and administrators attending the IU13 Technology Conference had the opportunity to engage with students about their inventive solutions.

Award-Winning Teams Advancing to the State Competition:

  • The Sea Savers Team (5th Grade): Jack Messick, Timothy Leaman, Marley Leggett, and Jacob Hirst earned first place in the 5-8 grade band for their invention, the "Sea Net Sweeper." This innovative attachable net provides a cost-effective and efficient solution to clean up the Pacific Garbage Patch, addressing a critical environmental challenge.
  • The SEL School Safety Squad (4th Grade): Grant Booth and Rochan Dhakal also took first place in the K-4 grade band with their "SEL Sensory Stuffy." This plush animal helps schools promote safety by providing students with a tool to express their emotional state through an easy-to-use indicator, enhancing social-emotional learning and communication.

Teams Who Showcased Exceptional Innovation:

  • The Recyclified 2.0 Team (4th Grade): Fianna Clark and Liesel Keller presented their invention, Recyclified 2.0, an AI-powered multi-streaming recycling bin. This invention has the potential to streamline and improve the recycling process, encouraging sustainability and environmental responsibility.
  • The Smart Shower Timer Team (4th Grade): Reid Young, Kyle Southard, and Brogan McCue pitched their invention, the Smart Shower Timer, designed to help individuals conserve water while showering. This eco-friendly invention promotes water conservation, addressing the global need for responsible resource management.

A special acknowledgment goes to Bear Creek School gifted education teachers Crystal Hirst and Eric Balak for their valuable assistance in ensuring the success of these innovative projects.

Bear Creek is proud of all four teams for their dedication and innovation. Special congratulations to the two first-place teams—Sea Savers and SEL School Safety Squad—who will represent Elizabethtown at the state competition with the potential to advance to nationals!
