Today, Bainbridge Elementary School hosted Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Smith (District 66, serving Jefferson County and parts of Indiana County) for a tour of the school, highlighting the impact of the school's facility dog, Josh, on students and staff.
Josh, a specially trained facility dog, was named in memory of Representative Smith's late son, who passed away in 2016 at the age of eighteen. The naming stemmed from a heartfelt initiative by the staff at the State Correctional Institute – Houtzdale Prison. In collaboration with UDS Service Dogs Program, the staff sought to honor two local young people who passed away too soon, including Representative Smith's son, by naming two puppies in their memory.
Since beginning his career at Bainbridge Elementary in the spring of 2024, Josh has become a beloved member of the school community. He plays a vital role in helping students manage stress and anxiety and even assists in classroom lesson plans. Whether students are learning how to measure by taking turns measuring Josh or practicing their reading skills by reading out loud to him, Josh is making a positive difference in the lives of students and staff alike.
Representative Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see firsthand how Josh is fostering a supportive and enriching environment at Bainbridge Elementary, helping students grow both academically and emotionally.
