EAHS Job Training Program Builds Skills and Community Connections

Elizabethtown Area High School students are acquiring practical workplace skills and making connections throughout the Elizabethtown community through the school’s new Job Training program.

Led by EAHS Job Trainer Abigail Edwards, the program supports students with distinctive learning needs in grades 9-12 as they explore their interests and prepare for life after high school.

Students begin their work in the program by identifying their interests and considering what they might want to pursue after high school. From there, they develop the skills and experiences that support their individual goals.

Depending on a student’s individual goals, that might include completing a job application, practicing interview skills, developing workplace habits, exploring careers, or gaining supervised experience at a community job site.

Students can practice a wide range of skills, including shelving books, preparing and serving food, cleaning and organizing work areas, boxing products, and organizing merchandise.

The program also includes a collection of hands-on “task boxes” that allow students to practice workplace activities such as rolling silverware, fulfilling orders, sorting vending machine items, creating floral bouquets, and folding and hanging clothing.

Beyond the school setting, students have opportunities to apply and expand those skills in the community. Partnerships are already in place with GEARS and Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, while the District continues conversations with other area businesses and organizations about potential opportunities for students.

Students are also learning from professionals who can introduce them to different careers and workplace expectations. Plans include community-based learning experiences with local emergency services and a monthly speaker series featuring professionals who can discuss their careers, workplace skills, interviewing, and other aspects of employment.

Through these experiences, the Job Training program is designed to help students build practical skills, confidence, and greater independence as they prepare for their next steps after high school. Community partnerships also give students opportunities to become more familiar with their community while allowing local businesses and organizations to play an active role in preparing them for the future.

Community Partners Wanted

The Job Training program is continuing to seek local businesses, organizations, and community members interested in supporting students through workplace experiences, field trips, guest presentations, or other opportunities.
