Elizabethtown Area High School Hosts Student Town Halls with State Legislators

Elizabethtown Area High School recently provided Honors Government students with a firsthand look at the legislative process through two Student Town Hall events held in March, featuring State Senator James Malone and State Representative Tom Jones.

Senator Malone opened his session with a brief overview of Pennsylvania’s budget process, including the scope of public school funding, highlighting the state’s $8.3 billion investment in education within a broader $57 billion budget. He also discussed revenue sources and tax structures, while sharing personal insights into his family background and the path that led him into public service. Students engaged in a wide-ranging question-and-answer session, raising topics from structural issues like real estate taxes and the potential reopening of Three Mile Island, to more personal questions about his commitment to education. Senator Malone also addressed legislation he has introduced concerning pet shops, puppy mills, and high-volume breeders, offering students a clear example of how policy ideas move forward.

Representative Tom Jones focused on the structure and function of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He explained how the House floor is organized and clarified the distinction between a constitutional republic and a pure democracy. His discussion outlined the legislative process, including voting on bills, amendments, and resolutions. Representative Jones emphasized the importance of civic participation, particularly voting, and explained how elected officials determine their positions—balancing financial implications, constituent input, and broader impacts. He also addressed current issues such as minimum wage and the role of lobbyists in shaping legislation.

These Student Town Hall events provided Honors Government students with valuable, real-world connections to their coursework, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and offering direct access to the individuals shaping public policy at the state level.
