The second-grade team at East High Street Elementary School, with the support of parent volunteers, recently hosted a lively grade-level celebration to cap off the CKLA Knowledge Unit on fairy tales and tall tales. The event — a "Colossal Flap Jack Feast" in honor of Paul Bunyan — invited students to dress as their favorite fairytale or tall tale character, making the occasion both educational and fun.
CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) is the District's elementary English Language Arts curriculum designed to strengthen students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. It combines structured phonics instruction with content-rich units that broaden students' knowledge in areas such as history, science, and classic literature.
Through the "Fairy Tales and Tall Tales" unit, students explored beloved, larger-than-life figures like Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and others. The flapjack party provided a memorable opportunity for them to bring these stories to life while deepening their understanding of the unit.
East High Street Elementary is proud to embrace CKLA's hands-on approach, which enhances literacy skills and sparks a lasting love of storytelling in students.
