Our Library Collections
EASD library collections are carefully curated to provide a well-balanced, well-rounded range of subjects, formats, and perspectives. Library materials are intended to help students explore ideas, encounter differing viewpoints on historical and contemporary issues, and develop critical reading and thinking skills.
Age-Appropriate Standards
Policy 109.1 establishes age-appropriate standards for materials available in school settings. Its content restrictions focus primarily on sexually explicit content, depictions of sex acts, and nudity that may be inappropriate for students at particular grade levels, while also addressing other content standards outlined in the policy.
The policies do not restrict materials solely because of their viewpoints, themes, or the topics they address. Standards vary by grade level and recognize important differences in age and maturity among elementary, middle, and high school students.
Parent Choice and the Destiny Parent Portal
Parents and guardians know their children best and play an important role in guiding their children’s reading choices. While the District maintains age-appropriate standards for library materials, families may wish to limit their child’s access to specific titles based on their individual preferences and needs.
New this year, the District’s former library-material rating and opt-out system has been replaced by the Destiny Parent Portal, making the process more accessible and parent-directed. Through the portal, parents and guardians may request restrictions on specific library titles for their own child.
This title-by-title process gives families greater ability to guide their own child’s access while maintaining a broad, age-appropriate collection for students across the District.
Important: Two Steps Are Required to Request a Title Restriction
A restriction submitted through the Destiny Parent Portal applies to library materials accessed through the District’s library system. Classroom libraries are maintained separately. To help ensure that the same restriction is communicated and applied in classroom-library settings, parents and guardians must also submit the District’s Title Restriction Notification Form.
To request that a specific title be restricted for your child, please complete both steps below:
STEP 1:
Use the Destiny Parent Portal to request the restriction for the title.
Once a title restriction is entered through the Destiny Parent Portal, Destiny will alert library staff if your child attempts to check out that title.
STEP 2:
Complete the District’s Title Restriction Notification Form.
The notification form allows the District to communicate the restriction to appropriate staff, including teachers who maintain classroom libraries. Completing both steps helps ensure that your request can be implemented consistently across school settings. Please allow up to one school day for library staff to review the notification form and communicate the restriction for classroom-library settings.
Both steps must be completed for a title restriction to be honored for your child in both the District’s library system and classroom-library settings.
Request for Review of Library Material
Parents, guardians, and other eligible individuals who believe that a library material may not comply with District policies may request a formal review of that material.
A request for review is different from a title restriction for an individual student. Title restrictions allow parents and guardians to limit their own child’s access to specific materials. A request for review asks the District to consider whether a material should remain available under Policies 109 and 109.1.
