Gifted Education
The Elizabethtown Area School District is committed to meeting the educational needs of students who demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability and require specially designed instruction beyond the regular education program. Gifted education services are designed to provide appropriate academic challenge, enrichment, and learning opportunities that help students develop their individual strengths and reach their fullest potential.
In accordance with Chapter 16 of the Pennsylvania School Code, the District follows a comprehensive screening and evaluation process to identify students who may qualify for gifted education services. Determinations are based on multiple criteria and are not made solely on the basis of an intelligence (IQ) score.
The gifted screening and evaluation process may include:
- Review of classroom performance and student records
- Teacher observations and rating scales
- Parent input
- Evaluation by a certified school psychologist
- A multidisciplinary evaluation, when appropriate
Students identified as mentally gifted receive specially designed instruction based on their individual educational needs.
Parent Referrals
Parents or guardians who believe their child may require gifted education services may request a gifted evaluation in writing. Requests are reviewed in accordance with Chapter 16 of the Pennsylvania School Code and District procedures.
