Free and Reduced Lunch Program

  • As a participant in the National School Lunch Program, the Elizabethtown Area School District provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. Free and reduced price meals are offered to every family who meets the guidelines as set forth by the National School Lunch Program. Families experiencing unusual hardships such as high medical expenses, special education expenses of a child, or disaster or casualty losses are encouraged to apply for benefits.If you feel that you qualify, the district invites you to fill out an application(available at the school office or click the link below) and return it to the school. The information you provide to the district is completely confidential and will be used to determine your eligibility for free or reduced price meals. If you have completed an application for free and reduced price meals, it is still your responsibility to see that your child has adequate lunch money or a packed lunch until you are notified of your eligibility.

    Frequently Asked Questions on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program

    What does my child get when he/she is approved for free or reduced price meals?
    Under the rules of the National School Lunch Program,students must be offered a meat/meat alternate, vegetable, fruit, bread & milk. There are no substitutes for milk without a doctor’s written order. Students must take at least three of the five food groups in order for the meal to be counted as a reimbursable lunch.

    In the elementary schools only one type of lunch is offered daily. At Bear Creek and in the middle and high schools there are two different types of lunches available: Value meal and Bear lunch. Your child may pick any of these meals for lunch. There are signs posted at each location stating what food items make up each meal.

    Now that your child has been approved for free meals, how does he/she get a meal?
    If your child has been approved for free price meals, he/she will need to bring his/her ID card to lunch each day. This card has a bar code on it that will be scanned by the cashier to make the purchase. No money needs to be deposited in his/her lunch account unless a la carte items will be purchased.

    Now that your child has been approved for reduced price meals, how does he/she get a meal?
    Reduced price breakfast meals cost $0.30 and reduced price lunch meals cost $0.40. Your child may bring cash to school each day or you may use the prepayment system. If you choose to use the prepayment system, he/she will need to bring his/her ID card to lunch each day. This card has a bar code on it and the cashier scans the card to make the purchase. When the card is scanned, the cost of the meal is deducted from your child’s account.

    If my child packs a lunch, may he/she get a free milk?
    No. To ensure that students get a well balanced meal, the National School Lunch Program will only reimburse the district for a lunch, not just milk.

    Will my child be identified in any way as a free or reduced price student?
    No. A majority of the students in the district use the prepayment system with the ID card to pay for their meals, so using the ID card for payment is common place.

    Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (e.g. Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language, etc.), should contact the Agency (State or local) where they applied for benefits.  Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339.  Additionally, program information may be made available in languages other than English.
