• Dear Etown Families:

We are pleased to kick off the new year with One School, One Book this month. At a school-wide assembly introducing the program and the book, your child received a copy of this year’s title...

    Nim’s Island by Wendy Orr

We are personally asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special activity together. Attached you will find a reading schedule so you can keep up reading at home.

In school, your child will be invited to answer trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. Reading together every night will help your child participate in our reading community because students, teachers, support staff, administrators, and parents in all Etown K-3 schools will be reading and talking about Nim’s Island

Reading aloud at home to kids (even older children) is a fun, worthwhile, whole family activity! Reading aloud helps to:

    • develop vocabulary.
    • model fluent reading.
    • expose your child to different authors & genres.
    • build reading stamina.

Please remember that since Nim’s Island may be above your child’s independent reading level, it is encouraged that adults at home read this book aloud to students. It is NOT expected that students read this book themselves.

We are excited to experience Nim’s adventures with all of you! With your help, we can build a community of readers at our schools. Please share pictures of your family reading and/or your thoughts about the “family discussion questions” using the hashtag #etownreads or email your child’s building principal so we can all experience Nim’s Island together!
