    2nd

We had our end of year party today!  We ate a few snacks and played chess with all of the pieces.  They did a great job managing all of the pieces and their various movement abilities.  Hopefully they will get a chance to play chess over the summer.  Have a great summer break!

    3rd

    3rd

We finished building Horton’s platform today!  We tested it by placing 1.3 pounds on it for one minute and it survived.  The students were very excited that it succeeded.

    1st & 2nd

We flexed our creativity muscles by completing a few pictures in our Scribble Journals.  For this activity, students had to turn a scribble into a picture of something.  They can complete the rest of the Scribble Journal on their own.  Next, we started working on chess.  We discussed the movement of kings, rooks, and talked briefly about pawns.  Students practiced checkmating the king using only two rooks and a king.

We spent some time today reading a chapter from A Survival Guide for Gifted Students and discussing it.  Then we continued working on designing a platform for Horton.  They had some great discussions about what would and wouldn’t work.

    1st/2nd

Today most of the students worked on computer coding tutorials.  They used Minecraft and Flappy Bird tutorials to learn how to use computer programming languages.  One student continued to work on his 3D printing pen project.

    1st/2nd

We continued working with our 3D printing pens today.  Two students finished their projects and began working on coding using Chromebooks.  They created a rocket and a solar powered scuba car with the 3D pens.  We will try to finish the rest of the 3D printing pen projects next time.

    3rd

We wrote a thank you card for Ms. Baxter thanking her for purchasing the 3D printing pens and filament.  Then I introduced our final project for the year; Horton Needs Help! - Platform Design Challenge.  We reviewed the story in Dr. Seuss’ book Horton Hatches the Egg and I explained the design challenge as well as the materials and limitations.  Then they worked together to brainstorm ideas for their platform.  They’ve already come up with a lot of good ideas.  The next step is to draw a plan for their platform.
