    3rd

Today we discussed what needs to be included in a graph and then the groups finished their crane arm graphs and sketches of their best crane arm.  We worked with Q-bitz for the majority of the time.  Students worked on their spatial reasoning and visual dexterity.  Before we finished for the day, each group shared the results of their best crane arm and how they built it.

    2nd

We finished researching topics today and many students began sketching their designs for the pop-up books.  I shared a pop-up book on dinosaurs by Robert Sabuda to help them design their books.

    3rd

Today we finished modifying and testing our crane arms.  Some groups added two hooks while others tried out longer hooks.  A few groups had enough time to graph their results and draw a picture of their best crane arm.

    1st/2nd

We started our last project for the year today; Pop-up Books!  Students selected a topic to research and wrote down a few questions about their topic.  Then they began researching their topics using Chromebooks.

    3rd

We tested the truck cranes, modified them to try to improve them, and then tested them again.  One crane arm was able to pick up about 60 rubber bands during the test!

    1st/2nd

We finished our pioneer homes today.  The students combined all of their plots of land to create one pioneer mansion.  They were very creative with it.  One student had the front wall, door, and front yard, another student created the main living area of the home, and the other student created the outhouse, hen house, and shed.  Great job!  Other students continued coding with tutorials on code.org.  They tried out many tutorials including Flappy Bird, Tynker, Minecraft, and Light Bot.  They each selected one tutorial to use next time that meet.

    3rd

We had a lot of things happening today.  First, I shared a few fossils with the group.  Then students started working on building and testing their first version of the truck crane.  Three students practiced for the Battle of the Books competition.  Towards the end of class, they cleaned up the truck cranes and did a few rounds of the 24 Game.

    1st/2nd

Almost everyone finished their pioneer homes today!  As students finished, they moved to computers and worked on coding using tutorials from the Hour of Code website.

    3rd

Today we started our Truck Crane project with Little Bits.  We watched a video of the CEO of Little Bits, Ayah Bedir, explaining how she created them.  Then we “began with the end in mind” and watched a video of the Little Bits truck crane in action.  Last, students paired up and began building the crane.

    2nd

Today we continued working on our pioneer homes.  Hopefully we can finish them over the next two weeks.  A new student to our group worked on coding with the Tynker website.
