Hello! My name is Kara Baxter and I want to introduce myself as the school counselor at Mill Road and Bainbridge Elementary Schools for the 2019-2020 school year! This is my seventh full year serving as an elementary school counselor in the district! I am a graduate of West Chester University of PA with a master's degree in elementary and secondary school counseling. Prior to working as a school counselor, I worked for a local behavioral health agency in the area as a Mobile Therapist and a Behavioral Specialist Consultant. One very special role of the school counselor at Mill Road and Bainbridge is being a C.U.B.S. teacher. C.U.B.S. stands for Children Understanding and Building Skills. I teach C.U.B.S. for Mrs. Nagle's 1st grade and Mrs. Nein's 2nd grade class weekly on fundamental social skills such as understanding feelings, friendship, bullying, kindness, accepting differences and self-control. We also explore topics including mindfulness and growth mindset, truly focusing on having students develop their coping toolbox to manage adversity throughout their lives. In addition to serving as a CUBS teacher, I meet with students individually as needed for counseling on concerns relating to school, friends or home. I also help parents through the referral process for outside counseling when needed. I will be planning various small groups on topics based off student needs ranging from friendship, focus/attention, self-esteem, leadership, changing families, anxiety and social skills. If you receive an informative letter for one of the groups listed, your child has been selected to be a member of a small group. Please feel free to contact me to discuss the group in further detail.
I look forward to working with you and your students this year!
Kara Baxter, M.Ed.
