Middle School Mathematics Philosophy
The goal of the middle school mathematics department is to prepare students for continual success in mathematics classes and standardized exams. We also want to guide students to make connections between math concepts and real world applications.

Course Information

Pre-Algebra
  • Course Description - Pre-Algebra is an introduction to basic algebraic skills and concepts needed to be successful in an Algebra I course. The Pre-Algebra course will also address state standards and address concepts found in the 8th grade mathematics assessment anchors.
  • Course Prerequisites - Student placements are based on test scores, grades, and teacher recommendations.

    • Graphing Calculator - This calculator is recommended, but not required - TI 83 plus
    • If a graphing calculator is not available a Scientific Calculator - This calculator is highly suggested - TI-30X IIB

Algebra I
  • Course Description - This is the first of two algebra courses designed to help students understand the abstract concepts of algebra. Content includes general computation, expressions, equations, problem
    solving, graphing, and inequalities. 
  • Text Book - McDougal Littel Algebra I 2007 Edition
    • Students may use this link above to access the homework assignments. Homework assignments are posted on the Homework Hotline section of the Middle School website.
    • Once in the lesson, students can click to see a powerpoint lesson that explains to the students how to complete the homework problems correctly. Extra problems are also available along with a step-by-step description of how the problem can be solved.
    • Please keep in mind that some of the strategies that the textbook uses to complete problems may be slightly different than the methods they were taught in class.

Geometry
  • Course Description - This course involves the study of shapes combined with principles of algebra. Content includes experience with basic geometric figures (two-dimensional and three-dimensional),
    deductive reasoning, surface area, volume, figure congruence, figure similarity, and coordinate
    geometry. By completing this course, a student gains experience in hands-on activities and
    practical applications to integrate geometric relationships in other content areas.
